Migration Strategies, Pitfalls and Possibilities, by Ray Turner, EMEA Presales Consultant OpenVMS
Ray has worked with DEC equipment since the early 80’s, initially with PDP11/44’s and then later using MINC-11’s. This led to him joining DEC in 1986 as a Field Service engineer and since then has worked in a variety of roles for DEC/Compaq/HP using and supporting the various platforms that run OpenVMS. He recently joined the EMEA central team from a UK role in 2012 and has since then supported customers
across the EMEA region with their OpenVMS solutions and projects.
His talk deals with migration of OpenVMS application environments to other operating systems such as Windows, Linux/Unix, HP NonStop, and cloud-based environments. Some of the different approaches and methods that can be taken for migration and their relative merits and applicability to particular situations will be discussed, along with ideas for target replacement technologies (compilers, databases, middleware options and user interfaces), use of Open Source software, and possible solutions to some specific technical and non-technical challenges. Recommendations and ideas will be supported where appropriate by reference to specific project examples.
